Worksurfaces
The most important element regarding the work surface is its height. Ideally all work surfaces should be height adjustable to accommodate the user. Work surface height for writing activities is determined by a persons seated elbow height. Work surfaces set correctly will discourage shoulder elevation (which happens when a surface is set too high) and forward bending over the desk (which happens when a surface is set too low). The work surface should also be;
- Stable and durable.
- Supports equipment and work tasks adequately.
- Frequent and static reaching should be within a sweep of the forearm while the upper arm is hanging along the side of the trunk.
- Surfaces should be non-reflective.
- Minimum work surface depth should be 24", which provides adequate leg and foot clearance.
- Work surface depths must be deep enough to allow the monitor, keyboard and document holder to be directly in front of the user at the recommended distances. If this is not the case, then a keyboard tray should be considered.
- Rectangle work surfaces deeper than 30" can result in reaching beyond recommended limits.
- Edges and corners should not be sharp and should have at least a 2mm radius.
- Adequate thigh clearance and leg movement should be present under the desk without obstruction.
- Corner work surfaces that are diagonal or curved should allow for keyboard tray clearance.
