Do Not Ignore the Benefits of Ergonomics for Your Home Office

Do Not Ignore the Benefits of Ergonomics for Your Home Office

Is your back starting to ache? Even the smallest aches and pains can one day lead to a disability. In fact, statistics show you have a 1 in 3 chance of becoming disabled before you retire.

Certain health conditions such as heart disease, back pain, and arthritis can all lead to a disability. By making a few changes now to create an ergonomic workspace, you can set yourself up for success in the future.

Whether you are working in an office or working from home, ergonomics will play a key role in your quality of life. Here are few tips from the ergonomics experts at Solutions Northwest Inc.

What is ergonomics?

First, let’s answer the question that’s on everyone’s mind: exactly what is ergonomics?Remote Worker Ergonomics Assessment

According to the ergonomics experts at Solutions Northwest Inc., ergonomics involves assessing your workspace, your body, and the products/systems you use each day. If the tools you use and the environment you work in don’t suit your needs, they could impact your productivity.

In fact, a lack of ergonomics has caused $20 billion in musculoskeletal disorders.

What is ergonomic workspace health and safety, then? By improving your workspace environment, you can reduce your risk of a potential injury.

By learning more about humans, their abilities, limitations, and bodies, we can improve how humans interact with their environment. That includes products such as desks, chairs, or an entire office.

The benefits of ergonomics.

Now that we’ve answered the question, “what is ergonomics,” let’s look into the benefits. Making a poor ergonomic choice in your office can cause discomfort and limit productivity. Instead, you can consider your unique size, skill, strength, and even attitude to customize your environment.

Here are 3 reasons it’s essential to consider ergonomics for your workspace:

1. Proper ergonomics will reduce injury-related cost.

Remember, ergonomics can help you avoid musculoskeletal injuries and issues. Otherwise, you could develop injuries over time. You might need costly chiropractor and doctor appointments to remedy the issue.

You could even miss days at work or require costly surgery.

If you’re experiencing back pain, consider looking into developing an ergonomic workstation or contacting an ergonomics consultant company to have an assessment done.

2. Ergonomics improve work productivity.

An ergonomic workstation can also improve your productivity. As your health improves, you’ll have more energy to focus on your work, improving productivity. When you’re working in a comfortable environment, it’s more likely your work quality will improve, too.

3. Working with an ergonomic workstation will boost your mood.

If you’re uncomfortable while working, it could impact your health and mood. Some employees will look for a new job if they’re uncomfortable. A bad workstation set up can cause back pain, fatigue, and other issues.

Making adjustments can improve your work environment to create a healthier, safer workplace. Your mood might improve as a result.

Need more help? Consider hiring an ergonomics consultant to setup your workstation.

Ergonomics means a positive change for your health, mood, and more. If you’re not sure what changes to make to your workstation, reach out to our ergonomics experts at Solutions Northwest Inc.

If you’re a remote worker and ready to invest in your home office space, consider an affordable virtual ergonomics assessment, which can be done from the comfort of your home (all you need is access to e-mail or a smart phone).

3 Factors to Consider When Assigning Your Employees as Remote Workers

3 Factors to Consider When Assigning Your Employees as Remote Workers

3 Factors to Consider When Assigning Your Employees as Remote Workers

Are many of your employees working from home this year? Or perhaps you’re considering hiring remote workers from now on? You’re not alone.

More business owners are choosing to have their employees work from home. In many cases, it has lowered costs and made for happier employees.

But is it really that easy?

There are plenty of benefits to shifting to remote work. Yet, what do you need to keep in mind when your employees are working from home and how can you ensure they stay productive?

Keep reading for three factors to keep in mind when you have remote workers on your staff.

1. Communication will be different for remote workers.Remote Worker Ergonomics Assessment

How are you going to communicate with your remote workers? How are they going to communicate with each other?

You’ll want your employees to be able to talk to each other as if they were in the office. To accomplish this, some employers choose to hold mandatory meetings over video chat. Not all remote employees are happy with this. However, if they’re brief and laser-focused, they can foster great communication.

Remote workers with unreliable video equipment, who live with children coming in and out of their home office spaces, may be better off with phone meetings or a text-based chat platform.

2. Compensation for remote workers.

Not all businesses are going to have to worry about this, but anyone who hires outside of their local area needs to keep compensation in mind.

Paying remote workers who live around the world isn’t the same as paying ones who live in your city.

You’re going to have to take into consideration the minimum wage of the areas where your employees work as well as the cost of living.

Employees who work full-time should be able to survive on your wages, but an employee in Kansas will have a very different experience from an employee in New York. Adjust accordingly.

3. Ensure your remote workers have a proper, ergonomic home office setup.

Happy employees are more productive employees. Your remote worker’s home office setup will play a key role in their happiness and work productivity. For example, working from your bed with a laptop won’t yield the same results as working at a desk with a proper home office setup.

A proper home office setup should be designed with ergonomics in mind. This includes ergonomic furniture like the desk and chair, as well as ergonomic gadgets like the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. It may take a small financial investment from the employer or employee, but we suggest an ergonomics assessment to assist your company in setting up a home office for your remote workers.

Right now, companies like Solutions Northwest Inc. are offering virtual ergonomic assessments specially designed for remote workers. During an ergonomics assessment, an ergonomics consultant will help you design the ideal home office setup for comfort, injury prevention, and work productivity.

Just because your employees are working remotely doesn’t mean you can stop catering to their needs.

Using remote workers can give your business a huge boost. Make sure you consider several factors before assigning your employees to remote work. Consider everything that comes along with remote workers and prepare yourself for your new venture.

If you’d like some assistance on the perfect home office setup for your remote workers,  contact our ergonomics experts at Solutions Northwest Inc. and inquire about their affordable virtual ergonomics assessment.

Skip the Extra Coffee – 5 Better Ways to Increase Productivity While Working From Home

Skip the Extra Coffee – 5 Better Ways to Increase Productivity While Working From Home

Skip the Extra Coffee - 5 Better Ways to Increase Productivity While Working

Remote workers know that working from home certainly has its perks. Yet it can also be hard to stay productive when you don’t have anyone with you, cheering you on or helping you stay motivated.

Maybe you’ve already tried taking a lot of breaks and getting more sleep to stay productive. Luckily, there are more ways to boost your efficiency while working from home.

If you’re a remote worker, then your office environment can be a huge part of how productive you are. We have a few tips below from ergonomics experts for maximizing your home workspace potential, as well as other ways to increase work productivity.

Know your peak work times.Remote Worker Ergonomics Assessment

One of the best ways to increase productivity as a remote worker is to know when you do your best work. And depending on your work, it is often possible to set your own work schedule as a remote worker. If possible, tackle your hardest projects during the peak times that you work best. It’s a lot easier to do difficult things when you’re at your best, and it can take a lot less time.

Here’s a remote worker perk: if your job is task-oriented, you may be able to decrease your work hours. If you do your most difficult work during your peak productivity hours, then you may be able to finish all your tasks, finish early, and enjoy the rest of your day!

Decrease distractions in your home office.

When you’re looking for ideas to increase productivity in your home office, the easiest strategy can be to eliminate distractions. That could mean putting your smartphone in a time out for 15 minutes or an hour. You can also set time limits on your web browsers for certain websites, if you’re spending too much time surfing when you should be working.

If you have family, let them know that you will be working during normal hours and that you need to be able to work undisturbed. Don’t be afraid to close the door and put some earphones on to drown out any outside noise.

Establish a routine and a schedule, stick to it as if you had a supervisor watching you.

Create a comfortable and ergonomic home office.

Your furniture is a tool to help you work. Create a comfortable and productive workspace by utilizing ergonomic principles to design a home office or home workspace for yourself.

If you’re not sure where to start, opt for a virtual ergonomic assessment to help you learn where to improve. Ergonomic experts may want you to consider swapping desk chairs or even getting a standing desk to help make the space more comfortable. Your furniture should work for you, not against you.

Read our ergonomics blog for tips or contact our ergonomics experts for an affordable ergonomics assessment of your current home workspace (these can be done virtually due to the current remote work requirements).

Decorate and have fun with your workspace.

Swapping out the decor in your home office can help you be more productive, too. What motivates you, a warm ambiance or a cooler, more minimalist style?

Take advantage of being able to work from home and personalize your space to your own taste. It can make your home office feel fresher, which gives you fresh energy as you take on your daily tasks.

A great perk of working from home is you can work just about anywhere; you may even be able to take a break occasionally and work for an hour in your yard just to get some fresh air.

Skip the extra coffee, and use these tips to improve your workday productivity while working from home.

Instead of upping your caffeine intake, increase productivity with the more natural ways above. With a fresh aesthetic, an ergonomic workspace, and time to work when you’re most efficient, you’ll be on top of your work game in no time.

Working From Home: 3 Easy Adjustments for an Ergonomic Workspace at Home

Working From Home: 3 Easy Adjustments for an Ergonomic Workspace at Home

Working From Home: 3 Easy Adjustments for an Ergonomic Setup at Home

Are you looking for ways to better adjust to working from home this year? If you’re improvising with an at-home workspace, you should make sure this space is safe and efficient for your workdays.

Remote Worker Ergonomics AssessmentTo do so, the ergonomics experts at Solutions Northwest Inc. have put together some quick ideas that can help you with your ergonomics at home. Optimizing your workspace will allow for comfort and effectiveness so that you can stay productive while working from home.

1. Start with your desk.

If you’ve been improving and using your kitchen table or counter as a desk, you may want to consider investing in a real desk this year. An ergonomic desk setup at home can help you avoid posture issues or back and neck pain. Make sure your desk allows you to comfortably fit your legs underneath so that you are not crowded or bumping into anything.

Make sure your desk is the right height so that your mouse and keyboard are at elbow height when you are seated. To find the best desk height for you, sit comfortably at your desk and put your arms down naturally at your sides. Then, bend your elbows outward as if you were typing to find the right work surface height for you.

If you’re having trouble choosing the right desk for you, consider having a virtual ergonomics assessment done for your workplace. This option is affordable and could save you money in the long run by helping you choose the most optimal desk for your work.

2. Re-evaluate your home office laptop setup.

While laptops are a popular work from home option due to their ability to transport with ease, laptops tend not to be the best in terms of ergonomics. This is because the laptop keyboard and screen are connected which doesn’t allow for much customization or rearranging.

However, there are still a few things you can do to improve the ergonomics of your laptop, such as investing in an ergonomic mouse and keyboard and a monitor to connect to your laptop.

This will allow you to use a laptop in a similar fashion as a desktop computer.

3. Monitor your screens.

If you use multiple monitors, you will want to be mindful of how you place them on your desk. Monitors should be at or slightly below eye level so that you can keep your neck straight and still see the screen. Bend your monitor up or down if you find that you are bending your neck up and down to observe your monitor.

Your monitors should also be an arm’s length away from you so that you can see the whole screen at once. This allows you to view the screen without moving your head. You may also want to adjust the tilt of your monitor to avoid glares and get the right head positioning.

Ergonomics at home is just as important as ergonomics in an office setting.

As a remote worker, your home workstation may not be traditional, but you can still work to achieve the proper ergonomics at home. If you haven’t paid too much attention to your at-home work setup, your body and your productivity could be taking a hit. Use these tips to improve your home office today.

Choosing the Right Ergonomic Furniture for Your Home Office Setup

Choosing the Right Ergonomic Furniture for Your Home Office Setup

Choosing the Right Ergonomic Furniture for Your Home Office Setup

If you work from home, it may start to feel like you live at your desk. Especially if you’re a new remote worker due to the pandemic.

It is likely you will be working from home for a while, so be sure to invest in some ergonomic furniture for your home office space. Ergonomic furniture will allow you to work from home in comfort and even improve your work productivity.

In this blog, our ergonomics experts will help you decide on some great ergonomic office furniture for your home office setup.

Remote Worker Ergonomics AssessmentChoosing the right ergonomic chair.

Since you’re likely to be sitting a lot, the first thing you’ll need to buy is an adjustable, ergonomic chair for your home office. While every home workstation is different, below are a few features every ergonomic chair should have.

The features of a good ergonomic work chair include a good backrest that can support your back throughout the day. The back of your chair should extend from the shoulders to the seat as well as curve to support the lower back and lumbar spine.

A good ergonomic chair will also have adjustability features. For example, your chair should have adjustable armrests that evenly support your arms while you work. Your ergonomic chair should also be able to adjust in height. Height adjustment is important to ensure that you are at eye level with your computer monitor. Height adjustment will also prevent your neck from staying at an uncomfortable angle.

Sitting in a chair with a good back helps prevent injury to your spine and promotes excellent posture. You will experience less back and shoulder pain sitting in a ergonomic chair with good support.

Once you have your ergonomic chair, be sure to read our blog about the perfect sitting posture for viewing your computer monitor.

Every setup is different, so be sure to contact an ergonomics consultant for more help.

Choosing the right ergonomic desk.

After you have chosen the right chair for your ergonomic home office setup, it’s time to start thinking about options for your ergonomic desk.

There are a few key elements you will need to consider before choosing the right desk for your home office setup. Some of these elements include the equipment space (keyboard mount, space for your mousepad, etc.) and other aspects like available leg clearance between your desk and chair. Additionally, you will need to consider the height of your desk to ensure your monitor is at eye-level, whether you’re sitting or standing.

Having a desk that can adjust may help but getting it perfect may be a bit tricky. We must suggest that you look into getting an ergonomics assessment to decide what works best for you.

You may also want to consider investing in a standing desk. While there has been a healthy debate about sitting versus standing at work, it seems a healthy balance between the two is key. A standing desk will allow you to have variety during your workday, as you can choose to alternate between sitting and standing while you work.

Consider investing in an ergonomics assessment for your home office setup.

Your furniture selection may vary based on things like body size, height, right- or left-handedness. The best way to ensure your home office setup is comfortable and productive is to hire an ergonomics consultant. Due to the pandemic, companies like Solutions Northwest Inc. have setup virtual ergonomic assessments for remote workers.

A virtual ergonomics assessment will allow you to assess your needs from the comfort of your home office. All you need is access to a phone or e-mail. Generally, this is an affordable option either for yourself or your employees and it will pay off with a more productive and pain free workday.

Investing in your home office ergonomics leads to a happier and healthier workday.

The foundation of every home office setup is investing in good, reliable, ergonomic furniture. You’re likely to be using your home office for at least 8 hours a day, so you’ll need to make sure you pay close attention to your home office setup.

When you’re comfortable, happy, and pain-free – your work becomes much easier. If you’re ready to invest in your home office setup, contact us today for a virtual ergonomics assessment.

Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard Review: Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboard and FlexMouse

Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard Review: Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboard and FlexMouse

Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard Review: Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboard and FlexMouse

Remote Worker Ergonomics AssessmentBy Janet DeLapp
MS, CDMS, CPDM, CPE

Whether you have been working remotely or have an office job, you are likely spending a lot of time typing on a keyboard and using a mouse in the modern workplace.

Frequently composing emails, writing documents, or just browsing the web can cause strain on your hands and wrists. If your work requires you to use a keyboard and a mouse, investing in an ergonomic device may be a great option.

Our ergonomics consultants have recently had a chance to review the Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboard and FlexMouse.

Below is a quick review:

The Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile keyboard is very comfortable to use and it is easily adaptable to multiple users by changing the amount that it splits and tents up.

It is ideal for traveling given its size and that it folds up into a compact square. This can be tucked away in any bag or case. The keys were responsive and gave good feedback. It is fantastic that this is a wireless device, this makes it so much more flexible. This would be ideal for kids as well.

The official product description describes the devices as “sleek, slim and lightweight, the Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboard is the perfect work and travel companion for the on-the-go worker. Unlike other travel ergonomic keyboards, which sacrifice comfort for convenience, the Goldtouch Go!2 Mobile Keyboards feature full-sized keys that are silent, fast and responsive.

Adjusts from 0º to 30º along the horizontal and vertical planes, allowing you to find the perfect position that fits your body type. Ergonomic comfort and precision: Features a scissor-switch system for fluid, silent keystrokes with tactile feedback. Built for convenience: From airplane tray tables to hotel desks, this slim keyboard fits neatly within even the smallest spaces. Additionally, this keyboard folds to a compact size for even greater travel convenience.”

The Goldtouch FlexMouse was great given the different sizes it provides.

This mouse would be a good fit for just about everyone. It also has a good feel and smooth operation. The official product description says this ergonomic mouse “takes the guess work out of selecting the perfect mouse. Four interchangeable mousing backs, ranging from Small to X-Large, will fit the smallest to the largest hands.

The additional attachments do not have to go unused. Smaller attachments can be used for tasks that require more precision, whereas larger attachments can be used for general use to maximize comfort.

No more muscle fatigue: The FlexMouse moves your wrist into an ideal 24 degree angle, eliminating the discomfort caused by wrist pronation. A thumb cushion encourages a more comfortable grip. Over-sized buttons: Your fingers can easily click without overly bending the interphalangeal joints, reducing arthritic discomfort. Bluetooth technology: Just pair the mouse with your Mac or PC and you’ll be ready to mouse, wherever you are. Better comfort, flexibility, and control are at your fingertips with the Goldtouch FlexMouse.”

Consider an Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard For a More Productive Workday.

If you’re ready to upgrade your home office, an ergonomic mouse and keyboard is a great start. If you want to take the next step, consider investing in a virtual ergonomics assessment from an expert.
